Free compost and advice

Ever wondered what happens to the garden waste you put into your green waste bin? Well, here's your chance to find out, and fill up with free compost at the same time.

KPS Composting, who process all the green waste collected by Wealden District Council, is opening its doors to the public on Saturday 13 September, between 9am and 1pm.  Residents are invited to come along to the KPS site at Boathouse Farm, Lewes Road, Isfield, East Sussex TN22 5JJ.

KPS has been collecting green waste from Wealden residents for the past ten years and turning it into high quality soil enhancer. Last year it collected just over 11,000 tonnes of garden waste. That is equivalent to the weight of 785 double-decker buses.

"Everything we recycle can be put to good use," explained Councillor Sylvia Tidy, Cabinet member for Environmental Services. "Newspapers are pulped and made into 100% recycled newsprint, steel and aluminium cans go back for smelting and re-use, plastic bottles are shredded, turned into granules and then reused to make wheelie-bins, street signs and fleece jackets.  And green waste is turned into top quality compost to replenish people's gardens and allotments."

Residents are invited to come along to see how their throw-away garden waste is turned into excellent compost ready to go back to work on the land. Tours have been organised involving staff from Wealden District Council and Eastbourne Borough Council.  East Sussex County Council's 'Compost Doctors' will be on hand to answer any queries you may have on home composting and green waste collections.

For free compost to take home with you, just bring your own bag along (one bag per person). Alternatively, 40 litre bags of soil enhancer can be purchased at a discounted rate of £1 per bag.
