Housing Needs Study
Housing Needs Survey 2009
The Housing Needs Survey was carried out during the summer of 2009 by Fordham Research and provides information at a District level as well as information at a parish/town level. All households in the rural parishes were surveyed along with a sample in the urban areas of Polegate, Hailsham, Heathfield and Waldron, Uckfield, Crowborough and Forest Row. The survey provides an update to the Rural Housing Needs Surveys carried out in 2004 by Action in Rural Sussex and the urban Housing Needs Survey carried out in 2005 by David Couttie Associates.

Housing Needs Survey 2005
This survey was undertaken in partnership with all other East Sussex authorities and Brighton & Hove City Council. This is one of the first surveys of its kind. Not only will it incorporate the key housing needs that prevail within each District but also look at the needs of the region as a whole.
The key findings of the survey helped to inform each Council's Housing Strategy, Regional Housing/Planning Strategies.

Rural Housing Needs Survey 2004
During January to March 2004, a comprehensive Housing Needs Survey was sent out to every household in the 38 parishes, which was approximately 35,000 forms! 41% of households returned their forms, which gave the project team and the Parish Councils a good picture of the housing need. A snapshot of the problems are as follows:
- the average annual household income is £22,388
- the average house price of a terraced house in Wealden is currently £179,232 (Source: www.landreg.gov.uk Apr-June 2006)
- young people aged 16+ cannot afford to buy a property in the villages where they grew up
- only 210 households were on Wealden's Housing Register
- most people would prefer to remain in their own parish
- due to the gap between local household incomes and house prices most people can only afford to rent
